About this deal

I was reminded how gorgeously unsettling Shirley Jackson's 'The Summer People' is and how much I adore MR James when I read his 'The Ash-Tree'. These twenty-two stories take the reader beyond the safety and familiarity of the town into the isolated and untamed wilderness. These 22 stories take the reader beyond the safety and familiarity of the town into the isolated and untamed wilderness. They cover witch persecution, hauntings, the pagan gods of old, and the true horror of what humans can inflict on each other as a result of fear. Andy Paciorek is an author and artist working mostly within the fields of horror, folklore, Forteana and other Weird stuff.

Az, hogy a folk horror – ha jól értelmezem – pont ennek a felfogásnak ad egy piszkos nagy pofont, de úgy, hogy a fal adja a másikat. The only two stories I really liked were "The Summer People" (which I had already read) and "The Lady on the Grey. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.R James (‘ The Ash Tree’), Saki (‘The Music on the Hill’), Walter de la Mare (‘All Hallows’), and Thomas Hardy (whose ‘The Withered Arm’ is possibly a contender for my favourite story in the book) – tales previously unfamiliar to me, such as ‘The Sin-Eater’ by Fiona Macleod and ‘Cwm Garon’ by L. He is also the creator of the Folk Horror Revival and Urban Wyrd Projects and the associated publishing arm Wyrd Harvest Press. Sőt, még érvényes, jól működő filozófiákat is építhetnek erre a gondolatmenetre, ezt tették a romantikusok is, Atlanti-óceánon innen és túl.

These stories are great for horror beginners, as they tend toward the restrained and distanced horror, instead of the gore and shock of more modern horror. And what wonders could be dug from the soil of Africa, Australasia, and Scandinavia and rendered with the imagery of Richard Wells? It is notable, however, that the majority of stories in this book do have a British or Irish origin, with Shirley Jackson’s 1950 tale ‘The Summer People’ notably bringing an odd slice of Wyrd Americana to the table. Also, Walter de la Mare’s ‘All Hallows’ had a good, eerie feel, but felt like the first chapter of a novel, so it never went anywhere. As much as I enjoyed the ghoulish elements to these stories, I also loved the nature writing in nearly every story that went hand-in-hand with them - the pearls of beauty that made the horror so much the sweeter.

I will not dally on the tales which sat less well with me because there is nothing constructive in doing so: my taste is not necessarily your taste, and I didn’t actually dislike any of the tales selected – there were just some I liked more than others, as is the way with anthologies. It is easier to become absorbed and drenched in the delicious dread and atmosphere of a spooky tale if you do not have to repeatedly reach for a dictionary or second-guess what is actually being said. The collection of stories is pulled from the classics to the modern, and gives the reader a wonderful selection of Folk Horror.

Folk horror' has become a very popular term in recent years particularly, with a lot written about the term. E. Nesbit's 'Man-Size in Marble' seems to be in every anthology I read, but no wonder - it's a classic piece, and I find the ending even more alarming now than when I was first scared by it aged nine.Am besten nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit mit einem Glas Portwein oder rauchigem Single Malt zu genießen! But even if some are repetetive, it's usually easy to see why they were included, and this is a perfect gift for anyone who enjoys horror or dark fantasy. Con semejante nómina era difícil que algo saliera más pero hay también otros autores menos conocidos con relatos de mucha calidad. A newlywed wandering around her in-laws' strange village trespasses and meets some mysterious children. They stalk the moors at night, the deep forests, cornered fields and dusky churchyards, the narrow lanes and old ways of these ancient places, drawing upon the haunted landscapes of folk-horror.
