The greatest difference between the SD-1 and Ibanez’s Tubescreamer series is that the Boss generates asymmetrical clipping, as opposed to the more common symmetrical clipping that is produced by the Tubescreamer. Hi Cal, that’s a good question, the overdrive built in to the Blackstar HT5R is excellent – probably better than the SD-1 to be honest. It works exceptionally well with darker guitars such as Les Pauls because it removes a lot of the low end before you hit the amp by setting the output gain to maximum.
