The most extensive treatment of the chess motif in Carroll's novel was made by Glen Downey in his master's thesis, later expanded and incorporated into his dissertation on the use of chess as a device in Victorian fiction. In the former piece, Downey gave the composition's moves in algebraic notation: 1... Qh5 2. d4 3. Qc4 4. Qc5 5. d5 6. Qf8 7. d6 8. Qc8 9. d7 Ne7+ 10. Nxe7 11. Nf5 12. d8=Q Qe8+ 13. Qa6 14. Qxe8#. [4] In the latter piece, Downey treated the 21 items in the composition sequentially, identifying the above 16 coherent chess moves, and another five items as "non-moves" or pure story descriptors, per Carroll's qualification. [5]General Doppelganger: The commander of the Royal Army, made up of equal parts General Doppel and General Gänger. General Doppelganger can also split into multiple Generals, of which each acts on his own free will. He is based on Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Not Quite the Right Thing: Reverend Charles Dodgson acted as The Confidant to a desperately lonely young girl, and became one of her dearest friends after being taken by her stories and promising to publish them in a book. Said book, ‘’Alice’s Adventures Underground,’’ became successful beyond his wildest dreams, and ensured that the entire world would remember Alice Liddell’s fantastical tale. But what he didn’t understand was that ‘’Alyss’’ hadn’t been telling him the stories she had invented, but the history of her life and her nation, and she had been counting on him to prove her honesty before everyone who had doubted her. She didn’t take kindly to her tale of exile and bloody coups being twisted into the most famous tale of childish nonsense in the world.
